Mission Statement:
The Mission of the Language Arts Department of Jack Hayward High School is to provide learning situations in which reading, writing, speaking and listening could be developed to produce individuals who are functionally literate, and able to think logically, critically and creatively.

Aims:
1. Students will demonstrate interest and ability to read age-appropriate materials fluently, with understanding and appreciation.
2. Students will demonstrate interest and ability to write effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate interest and ability to speak purposefully and articulately, as well as listen and observe attentively and critically.
4. Students will demonstrate competence in understanding, appreciating, interpreting and critically analyzing classical and contemporary literature, including literary works by Bahamian writers.
5. Students will demonstrate competence in using the interactive language processes of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing to gather information in a variety of subject areas.
6. Students will demonstrate competence in using the interactive language processes of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing to communicate effectively.
7. Students will demonstrate competence in applying the interactive language processes of reading, writing, speaking and viewing to succeed in educational, civic, social and everyday settings.
